Research method · Step 5
Reading a result honestly, including when it kills the project
A result is not the same as a conclusion, and a conclusion is not automatically a decision. We determine what the evidence supports, where it remains conditional and what it means for the next choice.
01
What this step decides
Return to the original question
Judge the result against the agreed hypothesis, threshold and intended conditions.
Use four legitimate states
Supported within bounds, not supported, inconclusive, or unexpected learning.
State the operating envelope
Explain where the finding transfers, what remains unknown and which action the evidence supports.
02
How it works in a commercial setting
Commercial research must be rigorous without becoming detached from operations. We design around safety, production, data access, cost and time while keeping the question and evidence standard intact. Practical constraints are recorded as part of the operating envelope, not edited out of the result.
03
A worked example
A model may exceed its accuracy target while requiring human review on 70% of cases. The conclusion must represent both technical accuracy and operational value.

Next step
A researcher reads your description — not a salesperson.
Bring the operating problem, the result you cannot explain or the decision your team cannot make with confidence. You will get a reply within two business days — including when the honest answer is that a research pathway is not the right tool.
