R&D Pathway Design
If your project may involve genuine uncertainty, the next question is: what exactly would you test, and how?
When you need this
- “We know the hard part is real — now what?” An assessment (ours or your own) has confirmed there is something genuinely unknown, but nobody has turned that into a question a team could actually work on.
- “Our developers keep experimenting, but nothing is structured.” Trial and error is happening, results are anecdotal, and each iteration starts from memory rather than method.
- “We need a plan the board and the engineers both accept.” The project needs stages, decision points and success criteria — not another open-ended exploration budget.
- “We tried a proof of concept and learned nothing usable.” The PoC ran, something happened, but without defined variables and hypotheses it settled no question — and the uncertainty is still there.
What we deliver
- Defined technical uncertainty. A precise statement of what is unknown, and why existing knowledge or standard practice cannot resolve it — the anchor everything else hangs off.
- Research questions and hypotheses. Falsifiable hypotheses that turn “we think this might work” into questions an experiment can actually answer.
- Variables and testing logic. What you will vary, what you will hold constant, and what result would count as an answer — the logic that makes a test a test.
- A staged project pathway your team can execute. A sequenced plan with decision points, so the work proceeds in stages your own team — or ours — can run and review.
How it connects
Pathway design usually follows an R&D Pathway Assessment, which establishes whether the uncertainty is real before you invest in structuring it. Once the pathway is designed, the next step is a Research Documentation System — so the testing you are about to do is recorded properly from day one.
The method behind this service is set out step by step in our research approach — this is where steps two and three of the value chain get done. Or see all five services.
Boundaries
This service does not determine R&DTI eligibility and is not tax, legal or grant advice. We design the research pathway itself; whether any government support pathway may be relevant to the structured project is a separate conversation — see Innovation Support Navigation.
Ready to turn the unknown into a testable plan?
Bring us the project. We will tell you what to test, how to test it, and in what order — in a form your own team can execute.
A researcher reads your enquiry, not a salesperson — and replies within two business days. That includes telling you when a research pathway is not the right tool.

General information only — not tax, financial or legal advice. Whether any government support pathway may be relevant depends on your specific activities, evidence and circumstances. Always confirm current rules with the Australian Government (business.gov.au and ato.gov.au) or a registered adviser.
